NILIS provides postgraduate graduate education in Library and Information Science, Teacher Librarianship, and Public Librarianship. It is an affiliated institution to the University of Colombo, directly reporting to the Senate of the University of Colombo on academic matters. It is situated within the University of Colombo, adjacent to the Faculty of Education premises (close to Bauddhaloka Mawatha).
