University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka has recognized NILIS as a higher education institution providing degrees. 
NILIS postgraduate degrees are awarded by the ‘University of Colombo‘, a world recognised educational institution. These programmes are aligned with the National standards such as the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and National Vocational Qualifications Framework (NVQ). We also follow guidelines specified by the Subject Benchmark Statement (SBS), and the Quality Assurance Framework for Postgraduate Degrees in Sri Lanka.
University of Colombo (thus NILIS as an institue coming under) has been listed in the World Higher Education Database. .
