Discussions on Building National Competency Standards on Librarianship
NILIS joined along with other LIS education providers to discuss the preparation of National Competency Standards (NCS) for the library sector必利勁
. The process is conducted by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) of Sri Lanka. When the process is complete, it is expected to open new avenues for the staff engaged in libraries. According to the NVQ Circular 2019-01, staff with long experience and engaged in supervisory functions can obtain NVQ Level 5 via the Mature Candidates’ Route. It is equal to the Diploma offered after completion of Level 1 of the three-tier Diploma/Higher Diploma offered by NILIS, Sri Lanka Library Association, and several other institutions.
On 24th June 2020, there was a meeting in this regard, with the Acting Director-General of the TVEC, Mr. J.A.D.J. Jayalath. Dr. Ruwan Gamage, Acting Director represented NILIS. Dr. Namalee Suraweera, Head – Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, and Ms. Thushara Abeysekara, Head of the Library Science Unit of the Open University of Sri Lanka also attended.
